演講摘要:

On average, a human eye transmits about 10 Mbps of visual data, or about ¼ of the average internet speed. We appear to rely heavily on visual perception compared to other senses, to the extent where it has driven vast research into higher screen resolutions, better cameras and machine-vision with A.I. processing. With the advent of the “retina display”, 2k, 4k and even 8k videos, we have supposedly reached the maximum clarity that our eyes can see. I.e. a “perfect” representation of reality. This seems to mark the end of development.

But, what if we take one step further? Beyond reality? Beyond 2D pictures? Beyond our eyes?

In this talk, I will familiarize you with the concept of “light-field,” which extends the principles of vision beyond what our eyes intuitively see. Light-field treats imaging not as a series of 2D pictures or even two-picture VR/stereo-vision, but rather the encapsulation of an infinite set of light-rays traversing and crossing in 3D space. Treatment of imaging as a light-field uniquely enables capabilities such as robust 3D measurement, post-capture refocusing, smooth perspective reshifting, seeing through occlusion and others that will be introduced.
The talk will also cover plenoptic cameras, camera arrays and quadscope cameras that attempt to capture light-fields. Finally, we will explore the application of light-field imaging in fluid dynamics, structural measurements, spectroscopy, microscopy, machine vision and even military.
